GREG WEBER – Appointed Director of Production by SF Opera

San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley announced today the appointment of Greg Weber as Director of Production, effective February 1, 2011.  Weber was recently managing director of the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York and previously served as technical director for Houston Grand Opera.  He succeeds Production Director Drew Landmesser, who has rejoined the staff of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
As a member of the Company’s senior management team reporting directly to David Gockley, the director of production manages an annual department operating budget of $20 million encompassing Stage Operations, Production Stage Management, Technical Administration, Scene Construction, Costume Shop and Wig & Make-up services.  This senior-level position plays a significant role with San Franciso Opera’s Media department and maintains a strong relationship with the War Memorial administration and San Francisco Ballet.  The Director of Production is responsible for managing co-productions and the company’s rental programs, while working closely with the general director in creating long and short term strategic plans for each of these areas.

Greg Weber brings over twenty-six years experience as an arts manager and technical director managing operations and producing theatrical events in senior leadership positions.  He joined the Geva Theatre Center in 2006 as Production Manager, where he oversaw all areas of production and was responsible for all artist and production contracts.  He was appointed Managing Director in 2007, overseeing a staff of over 150 and managing all financial and administrative areas of the $7 million multi-venue complex, as well as the areas of marketing, development and a current multi-million dollar facilities renovation.  He also serves as the theater’s principal community liaison, focusing on expanding the company’s community and regional partnerships.
Prior to his tenure with Geva Theatre Center, Weber served as Technical Director for Houston Grand Opera from 1993 to 2006, overseeing the production of eight to nine operas each season and all technical budgets, as well as leading the company’s labor negotiations.  Working closely with the company’s then general director David Gockley, Weber was instrumental in the development and execution of Houston Grand Opera’s community outreach initiatives of PlazaCast presentations, OperaVision, and its multi-media modular staging system for large outdoor venues.
Greg Weber received his bachelor of sciences in theater design and technology from Ball State University and his master of fine arts in theater technology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  He has also held positions as assistant professor of theater at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, technical director for Missouri Repertory Theater, and operations manager for VDA, The Event Design Group.  His numerous board and community affiliations include finance, marketing and artistic planning committee member for Mercury Opera; founder and chairman of the board for TheatreROCS, an alliance of twenty-two Rochester metro arts groups; chairman of the Board of Method Machine; and the Rochester Community Business Forum.

San Francisco Opera is the second largest opera company in North America and has been one of the world’s leading producers of opera since its inception in 1923. With a current budget of $70.4 million, the Company opened its 88th season in the historic War Memorial Opera House in September with Verdi’s Aida, led by Music Director Nicola Luisotti. The 2010–11 Season features 66 performances of ten opera productions—seven of which are new to San Francisco audiences—including a new production of Jules Massenet’s Werther, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, the Company premiere of Franco Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac, a new production of Leoš Janáček’s The Makropulos Case and, this summer, Richard Wagner’s epic four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen conducted by Donald Runnicles and directed by Francesca Zambello.  The Company’s 2011-12 repertory season will be announced in January.

Seán Martinfield, who also serves as Fine Arts Critic, is a native San Franciscan. He is a Theatre Arts Graduate from San Francisco State University, a professional singer, and well-known private vocal coach to Bay Area actors and singers of all ages and persuasions. His clients have appeared in Broadway National Tours including Wicked, Aïda, Miss Saigon, Rent, Bye Bye Birdie, in theatres and cabarets throughout the Bay Area, and are regularly featured in major City events including Diva Fest, Gay Pride, and Halloween In The Castro.
