That compares to 31 percent for the Democrat, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris.

The gap is within the poll’s sampling error margin of 5.8 percentage points for likely voters.

In the lieutenant governor’s race, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and current Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado also are about even. Newsom, a Democrat, has about 39 percent support compared to 35 percent for Maldonado, a Republican.

The poll was released Saturday and surveyed 599 likely voters by telephone in English and Spanish from Sept. 14 to Sept. 21.
