STRAIGHT PEOPLE NEED FALL SILENT WHEN WE SPEAK – SENTINEL OPINION

Three stars apppear in Saturday skies marking the close of another beautiful Shabbat, as newly bereaved loved ones anguish the murders of three gay youth.
Worldwide our straight friends will cradle us in genuine love.
But they don’t understand what it is to be gay.
Love them back in full tenderness, The Sentinel suggests, yet cleave to our own first.
Routinely, suggestions to our straight loved ones that they don’t get it are met with a guffawing ‘How can you say that?’ — these people who have loved us for decades.
And it becomes a debate on their capacity to get it, to get impertient arrogance of the embrace of acceptance.
If straight people want parity with us in understanding what it is to be gay, straight people must not only cradle us, kiss us — they must bend over backwards to earn it.
Fall silent in our presence when we speak of what it is to be gay.
Fall silent or step away.
