TODAY, local officials in San Francisco will propose condemnation of Israel.
They point to nine deaths aboard the Mavi Marmara Gaza Flotilla as their rationale, killed by Israeli soldiers enforcing an Israeli blockade.
Set aside for a moment, please, all considerations but one.
San Francisco Supervisors Sophie Maxwell (Sophie.Maxwell@sfgov.org) and John Avalos (John.Avalos@sfgov.org) are not stupid people.
But they are people ignorant of Israeli mindset.
They don’t know that all Jews — regardless of where they live in the world — are Israelis.
They don’t know that both secular and religious Jews are Israeli, Israeli for 5,000 years, that they are Israeli by secular culture and by religious law.
Worldwide Israelis have always stood alone in the world, set apart, and the world has always hated us for it.
THAT IS THE WORLDWIDE Israeli mindset which Maxwell and Avalos should consider for the sake of San Francisco, described more fully before the Commonwealth Club of California last week by Akiva Tor, Israeli Consul General for the Pacific Northwest.
“Judaism is not only a religion,” Tor stated.
“Jews are a nation,” he continued, “Jewish people are conditioned.”
“And Israel is a State, a nation State of Jewish ethnicity.
“It’s possible to be a Jewish Buddhist, and it’s possible to be a Jewish athiest.
“Being Jewish can be a religious template but it is not primarily a religious template.
“That is something not understood about Israel.”
The younger generation of Israelis worldwide were gulled into naïveté, demonstrated by audible gasps of genuine shock and pain Friday when the Maxwell-Avalos intent was announced at San Francisco Congregation Emanu-El.
No one can hurt you as deeply as your friends, no one can hurt you as much as those you admired and trusted, per Helen Thomas.
CONSIDER THAT worldwide Israelis have a centuries-old tradition of shunning.
Shunning every aspiration, every endeavor, shunning everything undertaken by those who hurt them.
This ignorant pair already inflicted the wound. The damage is done.
They are nothing to the Sentinel, now.
IF CONDEMNATION IS RATIFIED by the Board on behalf of all San Francisco, a great many Israelis nationally will go soft on support for Congressional funding to San Francisco.
A great many Israelis internationally will drop non-profit and business funding for San Francisco.
A great many San Francisco Israelis will shun everything Maxwell and Avalos touch.
Indeed, a great many Israelis would shun everything touched by any Board member who condemns the physical State of Israel.
