Assembly Speaker John Perez joined Assembly member Tom Ammiano, John
Burton, Aaron Peskin and a virtual who’s who of “progressive” Democrats at
the Triple Crown to raise funds for Ammiano’s 2010 re-election.

Even though Tom is without a challenger Speaker Perez said that Ammiano’s
challenge was “in expanding and deepening his leadership in the Assembly.”
He praised Tom as “one of the single most effective members of the Assembly
in providing all the resources members need.”

Of course humor was part of the evening with Tom starting off by saying
that John was asked for papers while he was walking up Market Street, but of
course since this was San Francisco Speaker Perez just gave them some
rolling papers.

After his swearing–in as Speaker, John Perez said “this is the only time I
was disappointed in Tom Ammiano because he didn’t stand up and yell, “God
Save the Queen”, but Tom explained, “the reason I didn’t do that is because
I’m older and I’m the Queen and he is the princess.”

Speaker Perez is no slouch in the humor department. He started off by
saying, “As a gay, latino, environmentalist, labor leader its good to be in
a room where I’m the moderate.”

Underlining the importance of the evening, Speaker Perez said, “our
progressive values actually makes government work better, more efficiently
and serves more people at a time when others are turning their backs.”
