BY RABBI YONI JAFFE
Shalom, this is Rabbi Yoni Jaffe of Congregation Emanu-El. I am writing as you have previously expressed interest towards a Muslim/Jewish interfaith study opportunity and to let you know that such a program is finally coming to fruition:
Muslims and Jews Study Their Religious Texts Together: Comparing and Contrasting the Central Messages and Themes of the Torah and Quran and Post-Canonical Sources
With Rabbi Yoni Jaffe of Congregation Emanu-El and Yusuf Torprak of the Pacifica Institute
Since the days of Isaac and Ishmael, Jews and Muslims have lived side by side, influencing each other’s practices and theology.
We hope to continue this tradition by bringing together Jews and Muslims to study our key religious texts in a spirit of mutual respect and appreciation.
Rather than focus solely on our differences, we hope to highlight the many fundamental aspects which connect these two great religions and to foster an open dialogue on what it means to be religious in the modern world. That is not to say that we will avoid our dissimilarities entirely.
Rather, through knowledge and shared perspective, we hope to investigate and expand upon the more divergent aspects of our religions as well.
Sessions will include presentations from both the Muslim and Jewish perspective before opening up the class to interfaith dialogue and discussion.
Topics will include:
– Theology and Core Beliefs
– Divisions and Interpretations
– Views of the Other
– Core Stories and Narratives
– Religious Law
– Rituals and Liturgy
– Gender and Modesty
–War and Peace
We will alternate between meeting at Emanu-El and at the Pacifica Institute’s Burlingame Branch at 1310 Bayshore Hwy Ste 11&12 Burlingame, CA 94010. See Map.

Additionally, all members of the group and their families will be invited to a special interfaith Passover Seder at Emanu-El on Tuesday evening, Mar 30th.
More details about the evening will be decided once the class begins. This is the first ever Muslim-Jewish Passover Seder to be held in the Bay Area and should be an exciting event!
You may register for the class now at Muslims and Jews Study Texts Together.
The class costs $36 per participant. These funds will go towards textbooks, copies and building rental/security as necessary.
Should that cost be prohibitive, please contact me or Yusuf at firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire about scholarships, as nobody should be prohibited entry based upon lack of funds. We ask you to please register by Mar 1 at the latest so that we may order the appropriate amount of materials.
Thanks, Shalom and Salaam Aleikum,
Rabbi Yoni Jaffe
