Bruce Springsteen is backing gay marriage in New Jersey.

In a message reading “A Brief Statement From Bruce,” the Garden State rocker announced his support for legislation in New Jersey that would allow gay men and women to marry.

“Like many of you who live in New Jersey, I’ve been following the progress of the marriage-equality legislation currently being considered in Trenton,” Springsteen says in the note.

”I’ve long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, ‘The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is — a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.’”

Springsteen ends the note by saying “I couldn’t agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now.”

A gay marriage bill is up for a vote before the full senate in New Jersey on Thursday. It’s being watched closely by supporters and opponents of gay marriage across the U.S.

Springsteen was recently honored at the Kennedy Center along with Robert De Niro, Mel Brooks and other leading artists. He’s nominated in four categories at the coming Grammy Awards. He’s long been active in political and social causes, and was a public supporter of Barack Obama in the presidential election.
