They came from great distances and nearby. They came from the halls of power and the streets. They came to honor a brother, a father, a mentor, a giver, a lover, a leader, a listener and an inspiration. They came to honor Reverend Cecil Williams and his 45 years of service at Glide.

There were artists who paint with words - Deandra Kittles declaring she is not a “statistic” and artists from the Alonzo King LINES Ballet who used their bodies and motion to communicate their souls. Words united with powerful music by the Glide Ensemble that made it impossible to stay still or quiet.

Who knew that Charlotte Shultz was ready for Broadway? She described the three awards she was giving Cecil. 1.for not leaving his heart in , but for giving his heart to San Francisco. 2. For stirring the pot, and 3. For arms as strong as Arnold, and as long as Spiderman for all Cecil embraces. These awards didn’t come with the regular plaque or paper but with two kisses and a hug.

“Don’t let no body turn you around” was the phrase song by Maya Angelou as she wove the narrative of Cecil’s tenure at Glide and what it meant to her and others of seeing anew that the things we have in common as human beings far outweigh the differences.
It was a night, as Reverend Cecil Williams described it himself, of unconditional love and many came to partake of the feast.
