ACT A LADY deals with a time when the men of a small Prohibition-era town decide to put on a play dressed in “fancy-type, women-type clothes.” The whole community is affected – gender lines blur, identities explode, and life and art are forever entangled. This thoughtful and exuberant Midwestern fable uncovers the woman in every man, the man in every woman, and the power of theatre to uncover both.

A strapping young man by the name of Ottis is dying to leave Sand Hills, North Carolina and produce his “Gospel Poetry Opera” in New York. With no money and few prospects, he decides to hustle Gladys, the local preacher’s wife. What she doesn’t know is that Ottis is also hustling her husband, the preacher. The scams deepen, complications ensue, and events take an unexpected turn. The characters learn the hard way that sometimes, deception can get you exactly what you want.
