This Friday evening at the Herbst Theatre the SAN FRANCISCO GIRLS CHORUS celebrates their 30th Anniversary in BAROQUE SPLENDOR. Featuring the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the concert will include music by Handel, Pergolesi, and Mendelssohn, as well as music from the Mexican Baroque. Featured guest artist will be 1988 SF Girls Chorus alumna, soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani. The Gala evening begins at 6:00 PM and includes cocktail reception, concert, dinner and live auction. The San Francisco Girls Chorus is recognized as one of the world’s most respected vocal ensembles. In January they joined forces with the San Francisco Boys Chorus to sing at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. SF Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas says, “The San Francisco Girls Chorus is a treasure. Their training, musicality and vibrant spirit are evident whenever they perform. I have enjoyed our long association and look forward to many years of collaboration.” Tickets are available for the full event and for the concert only by calling: 415-863-1752 x306.
SAN FRANCISCO GIRLS CHORUS MEMBERS
In the 17th and 18th centuries choral music reached a new pinnacle of refinement, sophistication and gloriously virtuosic sound. Young women’s voices were prized by composers and clamored for by audiences for purity, soaring beauty and thrilling versatility. These attributes and more make the Girls Chorus and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra the perfect partners for a splendid concert of amazingly beautiful music marking the Girls Chorus 30th Anniversary. The evening honors SFGC Founder Elizabeth Appling Bloch, and proceeds from the evening benefit education, outreach and scholarship programs of the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

With programs located in San Francisco and Oakland, the San Francisco Girls Chorus School offers a program designed to take young girls from their first introduction to the art of choral singing through a full course of choral and vocal instruction. This includes the study and development of choral artistry, vocal technique, music theory, music history, and performing style as pertaining to the repertoire studied and performed by the Chorus. The carefully structured training stages, Levels I-IV, are designed specifically to increase technical skills, stamina and discipline in accordance with each chorister’s age and physical development. Graduation from Level IV qualifies the singers to audition for Chorissima, the Girls Chorus’ acclaimed 45-voice concert and touring ensemble. “Successful completion of the Chorus School Training Program provides the singers with a beginning college-level knowledge of choral repertoire, vocal technique and music theory,” says Chorus School Director Elizabeth Avakian.
