From now until December 21st the New Conservatory Theatre Center presents the San Francisco premiere of AS BEES IN HONEY DROWN by Douglas Carter Beane. The story deals with mousy and insecure Gay writer “Evan Wyler” (Jonathan Bock) who is suddenly wooed and screwed into writing the memoirs of the mesmerizing “Alexa Vere de Vere” (Juliet Heller). She is the mythical snake around the tree to Evan’s naïve longing for Knowledge and Fame. The playwright creates an archetypical slithering female con artist equipped with outlandish inter-continental speech patterns and the exaggerated vampings of a silent screen goddess.

Somewhere between a shopping binge at Saks Fifth Avenue and the doorknob of a Hollywood producer, Evan descends into a helluva pit of massive credit card debt while keeping the facile and fast-tongued Vere de Vere very much in the manner to which she stays accustomed. Drained of his assets, watery creativity, and manly juices, Alexa skips town with a female variety wannabe writer with credit to burn. Evan, bent on revenge, wanders into the arms of Alexa’s abandoned husband “Ronald”, fabulously portrayed by Ben Fisher. He is the ever-struggling painter whose best canvas – As Bees In Honey Drown – is about to find a field of gold. Together, the cajoled Evan and cuckolded Ronald will mingle their creative forces and spill more than just the beans on the evil queen. “As Bees In Honey Drown” becomes a bestseller for Evan – a stinging exposé on the prevaricating Vere de Vere who, in turn, will wax nostalgic on the Brendan Behan truth, “There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary.”

Director Andrew Nance turns in his finest work to date. The gimmick of the play’s construction is the clever use of four supporting actors who cover all the previously duped and about-to-be-taken. It is the stuff and wry humor of the Drawing Room variety. The foundations of the grand con are set up in Act I allowing the plates of revelation and vindication to spin madly through Act II. The Truths come crashing down to everyone’s advantage. Andrew Nance guides his six actors in search of a well-written play to a climactic hit for NCTC and it’s 14th annual Pride Season.
