Question of The Day November 15
Is there a difference between an insect and a bug?
Yes. Bugs are specific kinds of insects — in other words, all bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs. They include stinkbugs, box elder bugs, and milkweed bugs, for example. Bugs have a stylet (a mouth shaped like a straw) that they use to suck plant juices from plants or blood from other insects. They also have front wings that are thick and colored where they attach to the body, but thin and clear at the hind end. This is not the case with all insects.
Gardening Question of the Day November 15
What is xeriscaping?
It is a type of landscape that uses plants with low water needs. It is a method most commonly used in areas where water shortages are common. Drought-resistant plants and low maintenance grasses, those requiring water only every 2 to 3 weeks, are used, in addition to caretaking with drip irrigation, soil improvements, and heavy mulching. Anything that allows for better water absorption and retention is part of the exeriscape technique. The term comes from the Greek word xeros, meaning dry.
