Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) leads the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) and Chorus, soprano Jane Archibald, and baritone Kyle Ketelsen in performances of Brahms’ “A German Requiem” (Ein Deutsches Requiem) November 17th–20th at Davies Symphony Hall. The Orchestra also performs Schoenberg’s “Five Pieces for Orchestra” (1909 version) led by Tilson Thomas, and the Chorus, led by Chorus Director Ragnar Bohlin, performs “Ich bin ein rechter Weinstock” from Schütz’s “Geistliche Chormusik”. The music of Sofia Gubaidulina originally scheduled for these concerts has been postponed, due to the composer’s illness.
Schoenberg’s “Five Pieces for Orchestra” were first performed by the San Francisco Symphony in 1951 under Music Director Pierre Monteux, and have since been performed here by the Orchestra under Music Directors Seiji Ozawa, Edo de Waart, and Michael Tilson Thomas. “Ich bin ein rechter Weinstock” is a choral motet in six parts from a 29-motet cycle titled Geistliche Chormusik, from the late Renaissance German composer Heinrich Schütz, who also laid the groundwork for the ensemble that would become the Dresden Staatskapelle. Brahms’ study of and affection for the works of Schütz informed his German Requiem.

JOHANNES BRAHMS and MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS
Soprano JANE ARCHIBALD is an alumna of the San Francisco Opera’s Merola summer program and Adler Fellowship. She made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2005 as “Elvira” in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri. She debuted with the SF Symphony that same year. Her artistry is generating excitement across Europe and North America with upcoming engagements including the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor and “Konstanze” (Abduction From the Seraglio) in Zurich, “Olympia” (Tales of Hoffmann) and “Cleopatra” (Giulio Cesare) at the Opéra National de Paris, “Sophie” (Der Rosenkavalier) at La Scala Milan and in Berlin, “Zerbinetta” (Ariadne auf Naxos) at Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and in Munich. She returns to Canadian Opera Company in 2012 for the title role in Semele. Concert highlights this season include Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate” with George Prêtre and the Orchestra of La Scala, Brahms’ “Requiem” with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tilson-Thomas, Messiaen’s “Poèmes pour Mi” with Christian Thielemann and the Berlin Philharmonic and Mozart arias with the Camerata Salzburg and Louis Langree.
American bass-baritone KYLE KETELSEN is in regular demand by the world’s leading opera companies and orchestras for his vibrant and handsome stage presence and his distinctive vocalism. His exciting 2011/2012 season began with Teatro Comunale di Bologna’s Japanese tour as “Escamillo” in Carmen, sponsored by Fuji TV. He appears on the stage of the Houston Grand Opera as “Figaro” (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and as “Don Fernando” (Fedelio), at the Metropolitan Opera as “Mr. Flint” (Billy Budd), and at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in the title role of Le nozze di Figaro. His concert appearances include Brahms’ Requiem with the San Francisco Symphony and the Detroit Symphony, a concert version of Fidelio with the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, Rossini’s Moïse et Pharaon with the Collegiate Chorale at Carnegie Hall, as well as a holiday program with the Madison Symphony.
