PURSUIT OF EQUALITY CONTINUES
San Francisco, California : “Today is a historic and deeply personal moment as we witness gay and lesbian couples marrying across California ,” states Molly McKay, Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) Media Director. “Many of us have worked so hard, sharing our stories with anyone and everyone about why marriage matters, making every moment a marriage equality moment. Every Valentine’s Day, MEUSA has hosted marriage counter actions across California where same-sex couples have gone to their local Coun ty Clerk ’s office to respectfully ask and then be denied marriage licenses. But after today, no one will ever be turned away and we are absolutely touched to see that so many of our MEUSA leaders will finally get to taste the fruits of their labor as they now can marry the one they love. Simply put, we’re elated.”
As of 5:01pm on June 16th, gay and lesbian couples will have the freedom to marry in California .
“Same-sex couples live in every county of this state and soon will be able to marry in their own backyard,” explains Pamela Brown MEUSA Policy Director. “Many of these couples have been in loving, committed relationships for decades and it is heartening to see that they will get the dignity and respect that comes with marriage. Once Californians see gay and lesbian couples who live in their local communities getting married, this will become a neighborhood issue. MEUSA is actively encouraging same-sex couples getting married to submit wedding announcements in their local papers as a way to celebrate their weddings and share their stories within their community.”
In addition to the wedding announcement project, MEUSA has been and is continuing collecting stories on local couples by county. A partial list of county contacts and stories is provided below.
“Everyone remembers their wedding day and today will be no different for same-sex couples getting married,” claims McKay. “We’ve heard wonderful stories from gay and lesbian couples who are receiving overwhelming support from friends, families, co-workers and neighbors. But we know our work isn’t done. While same-sex couples can now get marriage licenses at every county clerk’s office, two county clerks have decided to stop providing marriage ceremonies. Their decision is unfair to everyone, but we won’t let anyone rain on our wedding days…we’ve worked too long and hard for this moment. Today is a day we will celebrate and remember forever!”
Founded in 2000, Marriage Equality USA is a national grassroots organization whose mission is to secure legally recognized civil marriage equality for all, at the federal and state level, without regard to gender identity or sexual orientation . For more information go to www.marriageequality.org.
