San Francisco Fourth of July Weekend traffic and transit impacts

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) advises San Francisco residents and visitors of the following street closures and affected Muni routes during this 4th of July holiday and weekend (Saturday July 2 to Monday, July 4). Event participants and fun seekers should check with sfmta.com or call 311 to find out which of the 80 Muni lines will get them where they want to go.
Independence Day Fireworks
On Monday, the annual San Francisco Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will take place starting at 2 p.m. along the waterfront near the Municipal Pier and Pier 39. Entertainment will be at Pier 39, Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square . The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m.
As many as 200,000 people are expected in this area, resulting in traffic congestion and disruption of transit service in the northern section of the City.
Street Closures
· 8:30 p.m. to midnight Monday
o Marina Boulevard exit off Doyle Drive may be closed
· 8 a.m., Sunday to 5 p.m., Tuesday
o Jefferson Street from Aquatic Park to Hyde Street
· 6 a.m., Monday to 4 a.m., Tuesday
o The Embarcadero between Powell and Mason streets
· 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday
o Van Ness Avenue between North Point Street and the Municipal Pier Terminus
o Beach Street from Polk Street to the Terminus
· 2 p.m., Monday to 4 a.m., Tuesday
o Jefferson Street between Hyde and Powell streets
· 9:20 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Monday
o Northbound Embarcadero at Broadway
Parking meters, posted 1-2 hour parking time limit areas and Seven-Day-a-Week Street Sweeping will be enforced.

The remaining areas of Fisherman’s Wharf bounded by The Embarcadero, Van Ness Avenue and Bay Street will be closed to vehicle traffic for public safety as the number of pedestrians entering the area increases. These additional closures could start as early as 4 p.m., Monday as ordered by SFPD and SFMTA Parking Control Officers:
Embarcadero: Bay to Taylor
Jefferson: Embarcadero to Hyde
Beach: Hyde to west of Polk
Taylor: Beach to Embarcadero
Polk & Larkin: North Point to Beach
Van Ness: North Point to Muni Pier
Hyde: Beach to Jefferson
Leavenworth: Beach to Jefferson
Jones: Beach to Jefferson
Mason: Beach to Jefferson
Powell: Beach to Jefferson
Parking
On Monday, July 4, parking meters, posted 1-2 hour parking time limit areas and night-time Seven-Day-a-Week Street Sweeping (such as Market Street ) will be enforced. Residential Parking Permits and parking lane commute hour tow-away zones will not be enforced.

Muni Service
Sunday schedules will be in effect for Muni in addition to the added service detailed below.
Starting at 2 p.m., the SFMTA will provide pre-event bus shuttles to Pier 39 and Van Ness Avenue and Chestnut via Van Ness Avenue . The shuttles will supplement regular Muni service from Caltrain station at 4th and King Streets, from the Ferry Building and from Van Ness Avenue and Market Street .
SFMTA staff will be located at the Caltrain station and at the Ferry Building to sell special transfers for return trips. Regular Muni fares will apply.
Return shuttle service will begin at 10 p.m. at two staging areas after the fireworks display until 11:30 p.m. The return staging areas are:
· The Embarcadero and Bay for service to the Ferry Building and Caltrain station
· Francisco and Polk for service to Van Ness and Market
Caltrain riders are advised that the last Muni shuttle from The Embarcadero and Bay staging area will leave no later than 11:30 p.m. to meet the last Caltrain, which departs at midnight.
Once the crowds disperse, regular Muni service will resume. This can take at least a half hour. Participants and those traveling in the area are asked to allow extra travel time and to have patience.
The SFMTA will provide extra two-car trains beginning at 2:00 p.m. to supplement Metro service between West Portal and Embarcadero stations.
Reroutes
The following regular Muni service will be rerouted due to the congestion that is anticipated in the event area.
· F Market
· 8x Bayshore Express
· 19 Polk
· 30 Stockton
· 39 Coit
· 47 Van Ness
· 49 Van Ness- Mission
After 3 p.m., the Powell-Hyde cable car line will be re-routed to the Powell-Mason line.
The following Muni routes may be affected after the fireworks due to the increased number of transit customers and the high volume of pedestrian traffic:
· 91 Owl
· 22 Fillmore
· 45 Union-Stockton
Fillmore Street Jazz Festival
On Saturday and Sunday, the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day on Fillmore Street between Jackson and Eddy streets.
The following street closures will be required from 12 a.m., Saturday to midnight, Sunday:
· Fillmore Street from Jackson to Eddy streets
· Washington, Wilmot and Clay streets from Fillmore and Steiner streets
· O’Farrell Street from Fillmore to Steiner streets
· Intersections of Ellis and O’Farrell, Wilmot, Clay and Washington streets at Fillmore Street
The following Muni routes will be affected:
· 1 California
· 2 Clement
· 3 Jackson
· 22 Fillmore
· 24 Divisadero
· 31 Balboa
· 38 Geary
Monitored bicycle parking will be available on Fillmore Street between Ellis and O’Farrell streets. For event information, visit fillmorejazzfestival.com.
