PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SECURITY AUGMENTED BY $21 MILLION PROPOSITION 1B FUNDING

13 June 2008

Bay Area transit agencies are receiving more than $21 million in Proposition 1B money to improve mass transit security, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security announced today.

“The threat to transit systems is a fundamental challenge and is one of the reasons the governor, working with the Legislature, added security funding into the bond measure,” said Matthew Bettenhausen, California homeland security director, in a prepared statement.

The money will be used for projects such as advanced camera technology, lighting and fencing. The funds will also be put toward communication technology to help passengers and transit agency security personnel, according to the department.

Linton Johnson, a spokesman for Bay Area Rapid Transit, said BART is focusing mainly on cameras, biological and radiological detection systems, more police dogs and better communication equipment

BART is receiving more than $5 million in funding.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will receive more than $7 million.

“The safety and security of our customers and employees are our highest priorities,” said Nathaniel Ford, executive director of SFMTA, in a prepared statement.

“I am very proud of the work done by our Operations and Security and Enforcement Divisions to ensure a safe and secure transit system.”

Other transportation agencies receiving more than $1 million include the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority with $3,289,948; Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District with $2,148,388; and the San Mateo County Transit District with $1,106,406.

Fourteen Bay Area transit agencies are receiving funds.

On Tuesday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced $136 million in Proposition 1B funding for state transportation infrastructure projects, including more than $60 million for Bay Area projects.

Proposition 1B was approved by voters in November 2006.
