San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom leaves Thursday for a nine-day trip that will include a high-profile visit to Israel and participation in a major intellectual conference in New York.
Newsom is going to Israel as part of a delegation organized by the Jewish Community Federation and his visit will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the founding of the county.
The goal of the trip is to create connections between Bay Area and Israeli business leaders, a Newsom spokesman said. Many executives, including Richard Blum, husband of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., are going.
After six days in Israel – three in Jerusalem and three in Tel Aviv – Newsom will participate in the New Yorker Conference, a major intellectual gathering in New York City organized by the New Yorker magazine.
Newsom is one of dozens of people featured at the conference, though the only other elected official is Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill. Newsom’s interview on stage with a staff writer for the magazine will constitute the event’s first session, called “The Green City.” Tickets to the two days of talks and other events cost $2,000 each.
