On the eve of opening day, San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito suffered apparently minor injuries after being involved in a two-car collision in West Hollywood.

The accident happened at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Sunset Plaza Drive.

Zito was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and later released. Details of the accident were unavailable.

“It appears to be just a minor incident at this time,” said Sgt. M. Arriaga, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Zito “was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures,” Arriaga said.

Arriaga had no information on the other driver or possible passengers. City News Service reported the other driver was not injured.

The defending-champion Giants open the season with a 5 p.m. game Thursday against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

The game is a sellout and heavy traffic is expected near the stadium, worsening the crush of the afternoon rush hour.

Zito is scheduled to pitch the fourth game of the series Sunday night, according to the Giants’ website. He went 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA in six spring training appearances.
