Popular bottled water consumption arose as a con job and scam perpetrated by the bottled water industry, one consumer advocate alleged this week as San Francisco began a Take Back The Tap campaign.
“We need to realize that bottled water is a con job and a scam,” asserted Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch in a Ferry Building press conference convened by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

In addition to consumers, the campaign is aimed at convincing restaurant owners to serve only tap water deemed safer than bottled water.
Newsom pointed to studies showing San Francisco tap water is tested much more frequently for safety than bottled water.
“You may have all seen a few days ago where there was an Associated Press story that raised a lot of alarm across this country of our municipal drinking water,” Newsom recalled.
STORY ALLEGED TRACE PHARMACEUTICALS
“It is interesting timing because as a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors I submitted a request to the U.S. Conference of Mayors about six months ago to do a study about municipal drinking water in an effort to elevate the consciousness about how safe our municipal water systems are across this country.
“This report (by the American Waterworks Association Research Foundation) came out and raised, again, a lot of alarm around that safety.
“It was reported around San Francisco representing San Mateo County and Santa Clara County, representing 2.4 customers, we had water that had not met certain requirements.
“In fact, a lot of folks read the paper and were very concerned about their tap water.”
FINEST TAP WATER FOUND IN SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
“It turned out that they got it wrong; that the drinking water here in the Bay Area through out Public Utilities Commission turned out to be the finest that the association that did the testing had ever tasted,” Newsom continued.
“Not only was it the safest and the cleanest — they were mesmerized by how clean it was because for every single thing they tested, which were not necessarily known contaminats, this is the next phase of testing into the future, they couldn’t find anything that led to any concern,” the mayor reported.
BOTTLED WATER TESTED SUBSTANTIALLY LESS THAN TAP WATER
“We’re here to say that even though we test our water over 100,000 times every single year, and with all due respect to my friends at Pepsi and Coca Cola and Nestle, there isn’t even a margin of error how often they test their tap water that they call spring bottled water… as it relates to their packaging and marketing as it relates to their bottled water that is tested substantially less than our own municipal drinking water,” Newsom added.

“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which tests less than one percent of our beverages, is responsible for bottled water that crosses state lines,” Hauter observed.
“They only require that the bottled water industry test four bottles every three months — bottles that have no water in them — and then once a week they are required to test the water that goes in the bottle.
“They never test the water that’s in the bottle after it’s been stored.
“So we feel that bottled water isn’t safer and healthier, and that consumers are really misguided — they don’t realize that they aren’t getting a healthier product.
“Eighty-six percent of water bottles, that 28.6 billion that the mayor mentioned, end up in landfill.
“It take almost 18 million barrels of oil to make those plastic bottles.
“We can do better than that — we can make sure that we have safe and affordable drinking water for everyone and let’s get rid of the plastic bottles.”

“I am a San Francisco restaurateur and a small business person and I am very pleased to support the Take Back The Tap initiative.
“Incanto, my restaurant on Church Street and Noe, we made the decision more than six years ago never to serve bottled water in my restaurant.
“In its place, we offer exclusively for our guests Hetch Hetchy local water.
“It’s filtered, chillled, and we offer it complimentary.
“There are still sparkling versions of the water.
“We serve the water in reusable one liter carafes.
“Each of these carafes lasts on average two or three thousand uses before they chip or break and we have to replace them.
“Since we implemented our program in 2002, we estimated that we have prevented approximately 100,000 singles use bottles from entering the waste stream.
“Over the years, other restaurants have come to the same conclusion.
“Our local water tastes as good or better than fancy imported bottled waters — our guests appreciate being offered high quality local water rather than being sold a bottle of water.
“And serving Hetch Hetchy reduces energy consumption used in the transportation and refrigeration of bottled water — most importantly, eliminates the waste from bottles, boxes that come with bottled water.”

Re: radio, I used to listen to Jean Shepherd as a kid in the early 1970s. He was on WOR (710 on your dial) weeknights from 11:15pm until midnight, because WOR had a 15-minute (!) newscast at the top of very hour. I would listen in bed with the radio volume turned down microscopically low, since I was supposed to be asleep. Even at age 13 I knew it was good stuff.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

I will not agree with the best pitcher, but he is a very good athlete all the way around. And Arthur, about the McCullers kid, Pike pitched toe to toe with him for 4 innings. Both let up one hit and 1 walk a piece. Im not comparing Pike to McCullers because he is better than Pike, at the moment. He is pretty good, but can get better. Hes really having a breakout season both on the mound and at the plate. If he works hard in the off-season and builds up velocity, speed, and muscle, then he will be a contender for the 2012 MLB Draft.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly very good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works effectively, but isn’t as rapidly as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hello – I must say, I’m impressed with your site. I had no trouble navigating through all the tabs and information was very easy to access. I found what I wanted in no time at all. Pretty awesome. Would appreciate it if you add forums or something, it would be a perfect way for your clients to interact. Great job
