San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom expanded Monday on his rationale for considering a run for the California governor’s seat.
The Democratic Primary to choose a gubernatorial candidate is near considering resources needed to run an effective statewide race, Newsom told the Sentinel, and the prospect advancing Newsom signature issues is alluring.
“The reality is that people have come to me, people have talked to me, and they are talking to a lot of people now,” the mayor stated.
“And the reality is there is a race coming up — it seems like years, and years away — but the reality is the Democratic Primary is not that far away and the enormity and challenge of organizing a campaign statewide is such that people are starting to look, to search out, and to seek their candidate.
“We’ve had those discussions, it’s not something I’m ruling out, but frankly it’s so widly premature it’s not something that we’re trying to advance either.
“Anyone who knows me knows I’m very passionate about public policy and some of the things I’m less passionate about are sort of the deal-making and the politics.
“So you have to rationalize the two. Politics and governance is about doing both not one or the other.
“But for me the thing that drives me and motivates me is coming up with a better idea whether that be the issues around universal health care, the first City in the United States to replace our payroll tax with revenue-neutral carbon tax, public housing, if we do those things, add scale, and we feel like we can add some things worth doing then it’s worth doing.
“Otherwise there’s no way I can impress on you more the lack of interest I have just to be called something or have just done something to get the position.
“I want to feel like I can get something done and do something of significance, and if I don’t feel like I can add some value there there’s no way I’ll ever try to pursue it, but if there’s a prospect that we can do something to advance some issues, try to get something done and actually achieve some success during the process and ultimately by winning then it is something that I’d look at.”
